What is Modeh Ani?

Modeh Ani ("I give thanks") is the first thing a Jew says on waking, before getting out of bed. It is twelve Hebrew words long and takes a few seconds. Because it contains no Divine name, it can be said before washing, the instant you are conscious. The order of the words is the point: "thankful am I" puts gratitude before the self.

Why it matters

Jewish thought treats sleep as a surrender of consciousness and each morning as a renewed gift. Modeh Ani is the daily acknowledgement of that gift. Starting the day with twelve words of thanks, before email and before the news, quietly sets the tone for everything that follows.
